Simplifying Cryptocurrency Mining for Everyone
In an effort to make the cryptocurrency landscape more accessible, a team of former Monero developers, led by the notable Riccardo Spagni (also known as fluffypony), is set to launch the testnet of their Tari Universe desktop application. This innovative platform is designed to facilitate mining of the Tari token right from home.
According to Tari contributor Naveen Jain, the inspiration behind Tari came from the early days of Bitcoin, where mining was possible on standard computers without the need for specialized hardware. Jain emphasizes the importance of making mining accessible to newcomers who may not have a MetaMask wallet or an exchange account. He reminisces about the initial days of Bitcoin when anyone could simply download software and start mining.
The Tari Universe mining software and testnet are scheduled to launch on September 12, with the mainnet expected to follow later in the year. Additionally, community members can earn airdropped Tari tokens by participating in various online activities, such as engaging on Twitter and creating memes featuring the Tari mascot, Soon.
Jain describes the Tari token as similar to Ethereum, serving as the backbone for transactions and applications within the Tari network. While Tari operates on its own blockchain, it employs a proof-of-work consensus mechanism akin to Bitcoin and incorporates technology from Monero. Notably, it utilizes a hybrid mining model, where half of its blocks are mined on Tari, while the other half is achieved through merge mining on Monero.
Jain clarifies that Tari is distinct from Monero, stating, "It's not accurate to say that Tari is a sidechain. However, we benefit from Monero's security model through merge mining." This approach enhances the decentralization and accessibility of the Tari network from its inception.
Addressing skeptics within the crypto community, Jain stresses the importance of attracting new users, particularly from younger generations. He questions the reliance on older cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin to engage new audiences, highlighting the need for platforms like Tari Universe to cater to Gen Alpha and Gen Z.
Mining Made Easy
The Tari Universe software offers two modes for mining: ECO mode and Ludicrous Mode. ECO mode is resource-efficient, suitable for active use of the computer, while Ludicrous Mode consumes more resources for intensive mining when the computer is idle. Jain assures potential miners that no custom or expensive hardware is required; if you have a standard laptop or desktop, you can mine Tari.
