Bitcoin ETF Soars 109% as Growth Themes Dominate 2024

In 2024, U.S. exchange-traded funds (ETFs) reached a record $10.36 trillion in assets, marking a 28% increase from the previous year, driven by market appreciation and $1.12 trillion in net inflows. According to a report by CFRA, this growth indicates a significant shift towards growth-oriented themes and active management strategies, changing the landscape of traditionally index-focused ETFs.

The Hashdex Bitcoin Futures ETF (DEFI) emerged as a standout, achieving an impressive 109.4% return for the year. Other tech-focused funds like the Roundhill Magnificent Seven ETF (MAGS) and the Defiance Quantum ETF (QTUM) also performed exceptionally well, yielding 62.7% and 50.4% returns respectively.

Active ETF strategies accounted for 24.6% of total inflows in 2024, a notable increase from 14.6% in 2022. This trend came at the expense of smart beta products, which saw their inflows decline from 18.7% to 7.7%.

Vanguard and BlackRock maintained their dominance, capturing 53% of all ETF inflows in 2024. The Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) led the way with $115.1 billion in inflows, followed closely by the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV) with $86.5 billion. The iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) made a strong debut, securing $37.5 billion in its first year.

JPMorgan also made strides in the active ETF space, garnering 3.9% of total flows despite a modest 1.6% of assets at the beginning of the year.

The Global X MSCI Argentina ETF (ARGT) saw a 61.6% increase, fueled by optimism surrounding Argentina's President Javier Milei’s reform agenda. The VanEck Video Gaming and eSports ETF (ESPO) rounded out the top performers.

Traditional indexed ETFs continued to thrive, with inflows rising 89% to $759.3 billion in 2024, compared to $402.4 billion in 2022. Looking ahead, CFRA forecasts ETF inflows for 2025 to be between $500 billion and $1 trillion, with potential increases if the SEC allows ETFs to operate as mutual fund share classes.
