The Scheme
According to police reports, Wang was involved in a scam that utilized a fake BingX website. This fraudulent site promised to convert cash into cryptocurrency for the purpose of purchasing gold. The scam came to light when a male victim reported being lured into an online relationship with a female who encouraged him to invest through this bogus BingX account, ultimately leading to his loss of approximately $60,000.
Sting Operation Details
Detective Robert Virgulto initiated an investigation after the victim reported his losses. A sting operation was executed, where Wang was instructed to collect additional money from the victim at his residence in Wolcott. Upon his arrival, he was promptly arrested.
Legal Consequences
Wang faces serious charges including criminal attempt at second-degree larceny, first-degree telephone fraud, and criminal impersonation. Following his arrest, authorities discovered that Wang was a Chinese immigrant in the U.S. on an expired student visa.
