Major Crypto Money Laundering Case Unveiled

A Rhode Island resident, Agustin Villa, has pleaded guilty to a money laundering conspiracy that involved laundering over $25 million through cryptocurrency, tied to an international drug trafficking ring.

Details of the Case

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts revealed that Villa, aged 61, served as a courier for a criminal organization led by Jin Hua Zhang, based in Staten Island, New York. This sophisticated network was uncovered in Boston in 2021, and they laundered substantial amounts of drug proceeds and illicit business funds.

On May 26, 2022, Villa was involved in a transaction where he delivered over $75,000 in cash to a cooperating witness. These funds were converted to tether, a form of cryptocurrency, and sent to Zhang, minus a fee.

International Operations and Seizures

Funds from the Zhang organization were traced to various locations including Hong Kong, China, India, Cambodia, and Brazil. The investigation led to the seizure of both cash and cryptocurrency connected to Zhang’s organization.

Legal Consequences

Villa now faces severe legal repercussions. The charge of money laundering conspiracy carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison, along with three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $500,000, or double the amount involved, whichever is greater.
