GILLETTE, Wyo. — A shocking case of cryptocurrency fraud has left a Gillette resident with a staggering loss of $168,000. According to Gillette Police Captain Kelly Alger, the victim, a 56-year-old man, reported the scam on August 23.

The victim had been purchasing Bitcoin through Kraken and made various transfers to World ID using Trust Wallet over a period of four months. During this time, he received alarming messages from World ID, claiming he owed $78,000 in taxes to the IRS, which he paid.
Escalation of Demands
The situation escalated when the scammers continued to demand more money. After the victim refused to pay an additional $5,000 to release his funds, they took control of his account, locking him out and seizing the remaining $90,000.
